Certificate Program in Digital Storytelling

The University of Colorado at Denver (UCD), in conjunction with the Center, offers a series of four CU-transcripted, graduate-level courses in which participants develop the skills necessary to produce digital stories as well as to facilitate their use across a wide range of educational and work settings.

The Certificate Program consists of our three-day Standard or Educator Workshop, a ten-week online course, a five-day Facilitator in Training workshop, and a one-credit, self-paced implementation course.

IT 5330 Digital Storytelling Workshop: (Three-day intensive—offered approximately twenty-five times/year; this is fulfilled by taking the Center's Standard Workshop or Educator workshop in any available location) This course offers an introduction to methods and strategies for the design and production of digital stories. Participants get hands-on experience with multimedia tools and produce a three to five minute digital story. Lecture topics include principles of design and narrative structure, the story development process, uses of stories for education and personal development, and introduction to multimedia tools for storytelling. The historical and future significance of digital storytelling are reviewed. (Two graduate credits)

IT 5340 Digital Storytelling in the Curriculum: (Online course—offered twice a year through the University of Colorado at Denver during the Spring and Summer terms) Participants learn when and where to use digital stories in a school or training curriculum; review and explore various authoring tools and types of storytelling activities; and develop and implement a learning unit involving participants/employees in creating and sharing digital stories. (Three graduate credits)

IT 5350 Leadership for Digital Storytelling: (Five-day intensive—offered approximately two times/year; this is fulfilled by taking the Center’s Facilitator in Training) This week-long iworkshop focuses on the review and definition of facilitation techniques for digital storytelling in a variety of contexts, a presentation of the implementation practicum completed during the online course of the program, and teaching practice sessions combined with extensive feedback on performance. The workshop allows participants to self-assess and self-select specific skills that they’d like to practice, present, and receive feedback on. (Three graduate credits)

IT 5830 ST: Implementing and Evaluating Digital Stories (Self-paced, open scheduling, subject to instructor availability): This course is designed for teachers and instructors who have previously developed an instructional unit in digital storytelling or a closely related subject. Participants implement the unit with a group of learners, and evaluate its effectiveness and impact on learning. (One graduate credit)
