Participatory Research and Digital Storytelling (Co Sponsored by CREATE Praxis)


How can participatory research approaches leverage the purpose and power of digital storytelling to more meaningfully center the lived experiences of research participants and impacted community members? This new workshop offering draws on both popular education and participatory research frameworks to explore how digital storytelling can support with critically reflecting on and sharing personal narratives as a valuable form of knowledge throughout the research process. 

This workshop focuses on the integration of DS and CBPR. There will be a description of digital storytelling processes, but this is not a production workshop. It is co-sponsored by CREATE Praxis and StoryCenter.

The workshop requires attendance at four online sessions on consecutive Monday from September 8th, 2025 - September 29th, 2025. Each session is two hours and begins at 10am Pacific Time/ 1pm Eastern Time. We will facilitate an optional hour after each session for additional reflection on how to apply the content to your own work.

THIS WORKSHOP INCLUDES

  • An overview of basic elements of  participatory research and digital storytelling processes from goal-setting and planning to implementation and evaluation

  • Ethical considerations for storytelling and research involving living people (eg human subjects).

  • Application of digital storytelling and the integration of lived experiences throughout the research process.

  • Examples from digital storytelling projects incorporated into broader research partnerships.

  • Opportunities for participants to share and receive feedback on how to integrate digital storytelling into their current and future research projects.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This workshop is designed for community-engaged research practitioners who are interested in incorporating participatory media approaches that center the lived experiences of research participants and/or community members in their work. To participate, you will need a computer (Mac or PC) with an updated web browser and a reliable internet connection. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email.

This workshop requires attendance over 4 consecutive sessions on Mondays starting on September 8th – September 29th 2025. Each session is two hours long with an optional additional hour to reflect on how the session content applies to your work. The session begins at 10 am Pacific time/1 pm Eastern time.

The workshop closes when registration is at capacity. This workshop is a collaboration between StoryCenter and Community Research and Education in Action for True Empowerment (CREATE) Praxis.
